Lake Pichola is an artificial lake believed to have been created in the 14th century during the reign of the local Banjara community. Later, Maharana Udai Singh II expanded the lake and developed its surroundings when he established Udaipur as the capital of Mewar in the 16th century.
Over the centuries, the rulers of Mewar developed palaces, gardens, ghats and other structures around the lake. The lake therefore became closely connected with the history and development of Udaipur's royal city.
Two important islands, Jag Mandir and Jag Niwas, are located within the lake. Jag Niwas is now home to the famous Lake Palace, while Jag Mandir is an important historic island palace.
