Karavera Nathar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams of Tamil Shaivism. The temple is particularly significant because Sambandar, Sundarar and Tirunavukkarasar have sung Tevaram hymns in praise of the shrine.

The temple is traditionally associated with marriage blessings, and unmarried women are said to visit the temple seeking removal of marriage obstacles. Special significance is given to Amavasya (new moon) worship.

Local temple traditions also identify the deity as Brahmapureeswarar and associate the shrine with Sage Gautama and worship of the sacred tree on Amavasya days.

🏛 Temple History

Karaveeram is the historical name associated with the temple. The shrine is part of the ancient Shaiva temple network of the Tiruvarur–Cauvery Delta region.

Traditional sources describe the temple as an old shrine and associate it with the worship of Brahma and Sage Gautama. The temple also has a shrine associated with Gautama and a sacred tree connected with local worship traditions.

The temple is especially important from a literary and religious perspective because it is a Paadal Petra Sthalam praised by all three major Tevaram Nayanmars associated with this shrine.
