The original fort was constructed under Raja Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of Bikaner, with construction beginning in 1589 and continuing into the early 17th century.
The fort was subsequently expanded and modified by later rulers of Bikaner. Its buildings therefore represent several periods of architectural development and reflect the changing artistic influences of the region.
