Chennai Central Railway Station was opened in 1873 as Madras Central. The station was designed by British architect George Harding, and the building was later modified and expanded as railway traffic increased.
The station played an important role in the development of railway transportation in South India and helped connect Madras with important cities and commercial centres.
The station's distinctive red-brick architecture and clock tower have remained important features of Chennai's historic cityscape. In 2019, the station was renamed Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station in honour of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran.
